Why voice notes stop at thirty seconds
The cap is the same for everyone and you cannot pay to make it longer. It is what makes recording approachable and the collection openable.
A voice note in Celebrari is capped at thirty seconds. It is the same limit for everyone, on every package, in the free Common Sky and in a private one. You cannot pay to make it longer.
The limit is what makes it startable
"Record a message for someone you love" is frightening. People put the phone down. "Say one thing for thirty seconds" is a small, finishable task, and almost everyone can do it.
Any limit feels like a restriction until you notice what it does: it removes the question of how long this should be. Thirty seconds is short enough that starting is easy and long enough that nothing important gets left out.
It protects the collection
A keepsake with forty two-minute recordings is eighty minutes long. Nobody opens an eighty-minute thing. It becomes an obligation, then an unopened link, then a small regret.
Forty half-minute recordings is twenty minutes: still long, but a thing you can sit with on a Sunday afternoon. The cap is what keeps the collection openable.
The limit is enforced, not suggested
Thirty seconds is checked on the server, not just drawn as a progress bar in the interface. Anything longer is refused rather than quietly trimmed.
That distinction matters more than it sounds. A limit the interface suggests is a limit that changes with the next redesign, or the next browser, or the next person who finds a way around it. A limit the server enforces is a promise, and promises are what we are actually selling.
It is closer to how people actually say something real
Almost everything that matters fits in thirty seconds. A name. One memory. A thank you. A laugh that arrives before the story does. "I am thinking of you today."
When people are given unlimited time they tend to fill it, and the filling is rarely the good part.
Why voice at all
Text loses the person. The pause before they say your name. The accent of someone who moved to another country. The specific way a particular friend laughs.
Some of the people in a sky will not be around for the next one. Their voice is the part that is hardest to remember and the easiest to keep, and it is the reason a voice note is worth more than the same words typed out.
What we gave up
People sometimes want to say more than thirty seconds, and we tell them to write it instead. Written messages have no limit worth worrying about.
Between a sentence and a voice there is room for the whole thing. The limit is not a constraint on generosity. It is what makes generosity easy to start.
You can try it in the free Common Sky, or make a private sky for someone whose voice you want to keep.
