Birthday messages to write in a card

Thirty birthday messages you can actually use, plus why the specific ones beat the poetic ones every time.

"Happy birthday, hope you have a great day" is not a birthday message. It is a placeholder, and the person reading it knows.

The fix is not to write something more poetic. It is to write something more specific. One true detail beats a paragraph of warm noise.

The difference, in one example

"Happy birthday! Hope you have an amazing day, you deserve it!"

"Happy birthday. You are the person who taught me that a Tuesday can be an occasion if you decide it is. I have been trying to live like that ever since. Have a loud one."

Both are birthday messages. Only one of them could have been written by one specific person to one specific person. That is the entire difference, and it takes about twenty extra seconds.

Thirty you can use as written

Swap in the detail that is true for you and these stop being generic immediately.

  • You are the person I text when something good happens. Happy birthday.
  • I hope this year is full of the kind of days you make for other people.
  • You have been the calm one for a long time. I hope today someone is the calm one for you.
  • Thank you for the years you have been quietly on my side.
  • You are the reason a lot of ordinary weeks were not ordinary.
  • I still think about the thing you said to me when I needed it. Happy birthday.
  • I hope you get more of whatever you were doing the last time I saw you laugh like that.
  • Nobody makes a room feel more relaxed than you do. Have a good one.
  • Happy birthday to the person who always knows the right thing to order.
  • I hope this year is generous with you the way you are generous with everyone.
  • You make people feel like they are already included. It is a rare thing. Happy birthday.
  • Here is to another year of you being the most reliable person I know.
  • I hope you take up more space this year. You have earned it.
  • Thank you for being the friend who checks in first.
  • Happy birthday. I hope nothing stressful happens to you for at least a month.
  • You have a way of making hard things seem manageable. I hope today is easy.
  • I hope you get the good kind of tired this year.
  • The world is softer where you are. Happy birthday.
  • I am glad you were born, and I am glad I know you.
  • I hope you get older and stranger and happier, in that order.
  • You are the person everyone calls when things go wrong, so today everyone should call you for no reason.
  • Thank you for never making me explain myself.
  • I hope this year is a little quieter and a lot better.
  • You are very good at being a person. Happy birthday.
  • Every good story I have from the last few years has you in it somewhere.
  • I hope you know how much you are thought about today.
  • You are the only person I would do that again for. Happy birthday.
  • I hope the year is kind to you, and I hope you let it be.
  • Happy birthday to the person who always makes room at the table.
  • I do not have anything clever. I just think you are great and I wanted it in writing.

What to write to someone you do not know well

Name the one thing you have actually observed. "Thank you for being patient with me when I started" is warm and true and needs no history behind it.

Keep it to two sentences and do not apologise for the length. "Sorry this is short" spends the message on you instead of on them.

What to avoid

  • Anything about ageing. It is the one joke everyone else in the card will also make.
  • References to a hard year. They know. Unless they brought it up, the birthday is not the moment.
  • Wishes that are secretly instructions. "Hope you finally settle down" is not a birthday wish.

If you are collecting them

Getting thirty people to write something good takes more than passing a card around. Here is how to collect messages for a group card so it comes back full, on time, and includes the people who could not be there.

You can also make a private sky for the birthday — one link, everyone contributes without an account, and the messages, photos and voice notes stay together afterwards.

Collect it all in one place instead of one envelope.

One link. Everyone leaves a message, a photo or a thirty-second voice note without an account. Guests never pay, and the person it is for keeps every contribution.
